Listening Room Film Festival will highlight documentaries about local music

The first annual Listening Room Film Festival will debut in Baton Rouge this weekend, featuring award-winning and retrospective music and entertainment documentaries along with filmmakers and panelists. The event features live music performances from some of the bands who have music in films that are screening.

The Listening Room Film Festival will take place at Henry Turner Jr.’s Listening Room, December 3 through December 11. Festival hours are Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The Opening Night reception is Saturday, December 3 from 3:30-5:00 p.m, followed by a presentation and Q&A by Chris Stelly, Executive Director of Louisiana Entertainment, A Division of Louisiana Economic Development.

Documentaries include:

  • Out of the Deep Freeze-The Lost Tapes, The Best of the Leon Russell Festivals by Jeffrey Haas
  • Renee Edwards’ One Note At a Time, a film about musicians returning to New Orleans after Katrina
  • Charles Bush’s Raining In My Heart-A Blues Mosaic, Raining in My Heart-Back to the Blues and Music Dreams-An American Story, about blues musicians in Baton Rouge
  • Roots of Fire, a Cajun music film by Jason Lavoi
  • King of the Strippers and Gutter Punks by Ted Baldwin featuring musicians from Louisiana
  • We Live the Blues by Evan Kidd about SmokeHouse Porter and Miss Mamie losing and rebuilding their house after a 2016 flood
  • Arlene Russell’s The Life of Dr. Thomas Freeman, about Texas Southern University’s debate team coach
  • Greer Goff’s Black Dance in Louisiana: Guardian of Culture

Listening Room Film Festival passes are $50 and one-day festival passes are $10.00 each. Specific film block passes are $5.00.
