Legendary New Orleans jazz trumpeter Lionel Ferbos, the oldest living jazz musician still performing today, recently celebrated his 99th birthday. On Tuesday, September 14, you can celebrate the man and his history with 2 events. The Williams Research Center at 410 Chartres Street will be hosting “A Conversation with Lionel Ferbos” from 6 to 7:30 p.m., where you can hear Ferbos recount his life and career in his own words in an interview with music historian Jason Berry, author of the recently reprinted Up from the Cradle of Jazz, a history of New Orleans music in the second half of the 20th Century. For reservations to hear the interview, call (504) 523-4662 or e-mail wrc AT hnoc.org.
Immediately following the oral presentation, you can see a musical tribute to Ferbos. At 8 p.m., Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel will be hosting a “Tribute to Lionel Ferbos” featuring Jason Marsalis with Irvin Mayfield, Shamarr Allen and other special guests. Both events are free and open to the public.
