Less than a month after Lil Wayne came out in support of Donald Trump, the Hollygrove native faces a federal weapons felony and may face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Court records state the rapper was charged November 17 in Miami by the U.S. Attorney for “possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.” Wayne, born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., has faced several weapons charges in the past and was incarcerated for one year in March 2010 when he plead guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He served his sentence in New York’s Rikers Island.
Prosectutors state Wayne was found in possession of the firearm in December of last year after having “previously been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year. According to the Miami Herald, the rapper’s gold-plated pistol was in his luggage during a layover at Miami-Opa-locka Executive Airport. Police and FBI officials searched his private jet and he told authorities it had been a Father’s Day gift. Sources had tipped off authorities that Wayne may be transporting marijuana on his plane.
