The T-Bois Blues Festival took a tragic turn on Friday night when a lightning strike killed one woman and injured two others.
New Orleans resident Jacqui Stavis, 28, was killed when a bolt of lightning struck on or near her tent during a thunderstorm at the Larose, LA festival. Two other unidentified women, ages 24 and 30, were hurt by the lightning strike, which also killed a large Labrador dog.
According to the National Weather Service, Stavis’ death marked the first United States lightning fataility of 2016.
Longtime WWOZ programming director Dwayne Breashears, who knew Stavis through a circle of New Orleanians that attend the Burning Man festival each year, told the New Orleans Advocate, “We are all just numbed by it…She just dove into the culture of New Orleans, just became a part of it. She just wanted to do positive things here.”
This year’s T-Bois Blues Festival featured headlining performances from Anders Osborne, Nigel Hall and many more. Despite the severe weather and the tragedy on Friday night, the event continued throughout the weekend. A statement from the festival’s organizers reads:
The Falgout Family is deeply saddened by the tragic event that occurred this weekend at T-Bois Blues Festival. Every attendee of this small festival is part of the T-Bois family, and we feel as though we lost a family member this weekend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Stavis family and all those who love Jacqui, as well as the others injured and affected by Friday night’s tragedy.
We have many more thoughts and experiences to share from a weekend that presented quite a few challenges but saw a group of workers and festival goers persevere through them. But out of respect for all those mourning this loss we will take the next few days to reflect on the weekend and step away from social media. We thank every person who attended this years T-Bois Blues Fest in any capacity, and we hope to continue to provide a place for good friends, good food and good music.
