Go see Bizet’s “other opera” just to hear the duet “Au fond du temple saint.” Two men (a tenor and a baritone) renew their friendship, even though they have both fallen in love with the same woman. This duet is perhaps one of the most famous in all of opera.
The opera was first performed in Paris in 1863. Although it was not well-received, it has gained popularity and today the opera is regularly performed.
It’s not “Carmen,” but Bizet’s tunes are abundant and the orchestration is colorful and exotic. And really, don’t you want to know which man makes the ultimate sacrifice for the other at the end?
“The Pearl Fishers” will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday, January 28 and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 30 at The Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts. 801 North Rampart St. For more information call (504) 529-3000.
