American contemporary Christian music singer and songwriter Lauren Daigle of Lafayette has nabbed her seventh Billboard Music Award for “Top Christian Artist” at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards last Wednesday. Rocking jewelry by New Orleans-based designer and Bravo-lebrity Reagan Charleston, Daigle proudly said, “There is amazing hope found in God, and he has an incredible way to take one story and turn it completely different. I was just a girl from Louisiana, and now I’m standing here in Los Angeles; and for all those watching that need hope tonight, He has it. He has it. He has the hope, especially for times like these.”
To date Daigle’s video “You Say,” which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2018, has broke several records. To date, the video has over 177 million views on YouTube. The record, “Look Up Child” is the highest-charting Christian album by a woman in over 20 years. The album’s lead single, “You Say”, peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard 100 chart and has broken the record for the number of weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart at 101 weeks for any solo artist. Daigle earned two Grammy Awards for both the album and single.
Born in Lake Charles, Daigle’s voice has been described as both “smoky and sweet” and compared to Adele mixed with Amy Winehouse. As a child, Daigle suffered a chronic and debilitating illness which she considers to have strongly influenced her singing. She would go on to perform in the choir at LSU and eventually try out for “American Idol” twice, being cut both times.
