Last month, OffBeat reported that the New Orleans City Planning Commission had unanimously approved trumpeter Kermit Ruffins’ request to rezone the property located at 1500 North Claiborne Avenue, the official address of famed club, Ernie K-Doe’s Mother-in-Law Lounge. Yesterday, the City Council echoed the Planning Commission’s sentiments and legally granted the beloved local musician permission to reopen the shuttered spot he leased nearly 10 months ago. Though Ruffins has yet to announce his plans for lounge, he has announced (via Facebook) his plans to host a community meetup at his other nearby neighborhood venture, Kermit’s Treme Speakeasy, at noon next Wednesday to discuss ways to “stop the city from taking live entertainment away from small clubs.”
