Just in time for fall, local indie band St. Lorelei, releases “Wish,” the first single off their goth and dreampop influenced album, “Beast.” The new LP drops on October 30. Featuring bandleader and songwriter Jo Morris’ haunting vocals, “Wish” is a mix of 60s bubblegum pop with eerie melancholy — perfect for a gloomy fall evening.
Regarding the single, Morris says, “The song is about being at the excruciating point of a codependent relationship when, despite still feeling the emotional and physical bond, the only option left is to end it.”
Morris’ voice has been compared to PJ Harvey and Delores O’Riordan of The Cranberries. St. Lorelei was formed in 2018 in New Orleans by Morris and Steve Walkup. Their goal was to combined the sounds of some of their favorite artists such as The Breeders, Julie Cruise, Patsy Cline, and others.
Morris says her songs aren’t written for the living as her lyric inspiration often comes from imagined spectral realms and love affairs with spirits, with the exception of “Outside the Green,” written for Keanu Reeves’ character from “The Matrix.” When asked, she may claim that the inspiration came from a meditation on breaking through the corporeal and spiritual divide.
St. Lorelei’s upcoming debut album, “Beast,” was recorded in the swamps of Louisiana by Grammy-winning sound engineer, Mark Bingham.
