New Orleans’ own Jon Cleary won the first Grammy of his career this afternoon when he picked up Best Regional Roots Music Album honors for his 2015 release Go Go Juice. Cleary beat out fellow Louisianians The Revelers, who were nominated for their 2015 album Get Ready, for the award.
The announcement came around 4pm CT, during the daytime portion of the 58th annual Grammys. The prime time portion of the ceremony will be broadcast on CBS tonight at 7pm CT.
Interestingly, the Grammys’ tastes appear to align with our own this year, as OffBeat named Cleary’s Go Go Juice the best Louisiana album of 2015. The pianist and songwriter also took home four 2015 Best of the Beat Awards, including Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Song of the Year (for “Boneyard”) and Best Piano/Keyboardist.
In his review for Go Go Juice, OffBeat’s Brett Milano stated that the album was “one more example that the good stuff is still around.”
Cleary isn’t the only Louisiana artist to take home an award this year. Lettsworth, LA native Buddy Guy was given the Best Blues Album award for his 2015 record Born to Play Guitar. Other Louisiana artists that were nominated for this year’s Grammys include Terence Blanchard, Lil’ Wayne, Tim McGraw and Jamison Ross.
