New Orleans-area native and this month’s OffBeat Magazine cover musician Jon Batiste is set to perform at the prestigious Élysée Palace in Paris on June 21 as part of the annual celebration of Fête de la Musique. Louisiana will showcase its rich musical heritage as the guest of honor, emphasizing the deep and historical ties between France and the state. Acclaimed French-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf will join Batiste and esteemed jazz legends from New Orleans, including Herlin Riley, Mahmoud Chouki, and Mitchell Player. The event will continue to enhance muscial ties between the two countries and will showcase New Orleans musicians, in addition to the world-famous Batiste.
Nathalie Beras, Consul General of France in Louisiana, expressed her excitement about Louisiana’s invitation and the collaborative efforts between the two regions, saying, “We are thrilled that Louisiana has been invited by President Macron for this unique event. This Fête de la Musique is a strong sign of our deep cooperation in many areas, including music, of course.”
Originating in France in 1982, Fête de la Musique has become an annual celebration observed on the summer solstice, June 21. The event encourages citizens and residents to showcase their musical talents by playing music in public spaces, parks, and neighborhoods. Since its inception, Fête de la Musique has spread to numerous countries worldwide, embodying the universal language of music.
As Jon Batiste takes the stage at the Élysée Palace, his performance will solidify the enduring bonds between France and Louisiana, celebrating their shared musical heritage and paving the way for future collaborations in art and culture.
