Jon Batiste and his band, Stay Human, made their debut as the new house band of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which premiered on Tuesday night on CBS. Batiste made a huge impression with his crack band (he’s “charismatic” and “the band is killer,” and his rendition of “Everyday People,” accompanying musical luminaries Mavis Staples, Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes) and more.
“It’s not only promoting New Orleans music, but it’s also promoting an alternative to popular culture. That’s the beauty of having a television platform or a hit record or anything that goes out to the world,” Batiste said in an interview with OffBeat’s Geraldine Wyckoff in the September 2015 issue. “It becomes something that could infiltrate the popular culture or at least touch enough people that they can have a choice.”
Colbert announced Batiste’s new position on the show when he paid a visit to Frenchmen Street, last June.
A member of the renowned New Orleans musical Batiste family, the 28 year-old Kenner native is garnering a lot of attention nationally. He will make an appearance on NPR’s afternoon show All Things considered today at 4, and has been the topic of a feature in the New York Times.
