Award-winning children’s entertainer and musician Johnette Downing was recently named by the Recording Academy the Chapter Governor for the organization’s Memphis chapter.
Downing announced the news on the website she shares with her husband, Grammy-winning roots music producer Scott Billington:
“We are pleased to announce that Johnette was elected as a Chapter Governor for the Memphis Chapter of the Recording Academy. It is an honor to join a community that works for creators’ rights, advocates to keep music in our schools, and helps the music community in times of need. The Memphis Chapter is a regional chapter serving communities up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to St. Louis,” the statement reads.
Downing, a New Orleans native, performs frequently (pre-Covid) at schools, libraries and festivals. In 2019, she and her husband released their debut album as a duo, Swamp Romp. The album and the couple were featured in OffBeat‘s 2019 Jazz Fest Bible.
