John Prine will perform at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans on Friday, December 2. He will be supported by husband-and-wife duo Shovels & Rope, who were scheduled to headline the first day of this year’s Hogs for the Cause before it was rained out.
Despite a number of Grammy wins, and the fact that his songs have been recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, John Denver, Joan Baez, Ben Harper and others, Prine has largely flown under the radar throughout his career. Known for his descriptive, poetic lyrics and his gentle demeanor, the singer-songwriter successfully reinvented his vocal style after a battle with squamous cell cancer deepened his voice in 1998.
Prine has toured regularly in recent years, though is last album, Singing Mailman Delivers, was released in 2011. We even got the chance to speak with him in 2002, when he appeared in the Backtalk section of OffBeat’s December issue.
Tickets for Prine’s concert at the Saenger will go on sale next Friday, April 15 at 10am via Ticketmaster. Pre-sale tickets will be available two days earlier, on Wednesday, April 13.
