English guitar pioneer John McLaughlin will join forces with Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring to celebrate the work of McLaughlin’s influential jazz-rock project, Mahavishnu Orchestra. The extensive tour—dubbed “The Meeting of the Spirits”—will take over New Orleans’ Joy Theater on Monday, November 27.
Founded in 1971, Mahavishnu Orchestra was a multinational group that incorporated elements of jazz and progressive rock, as well as classical music styles from both Europe and India. The band went through a number of lineup changes over the years before releasing a final album in 1987, but was always led by McLaughlin.
At their upcoming shows, McLaughlin and Herring will each perform sets with their respective bands: The 4th Dimension and The Invisible Whip. The pair will then team up to explore the music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra for the final set of every show.
McLaughlin expects the tour to be his last outing through the United States.
Tickets for the shows are now on sale.
