Legendary British singer Joe Cocker passed away today after a bout with lung cancer. The gravel-voiced crooner was 70 years old.
Cocker included the songs “Eye on the Prize” and “Hard Knocks,” penned by Marc Broussard, on his 23rd and final album Fire it Up.
Cocker played Jazz Fest in 2009, and headlined the main stage at the Gretna Heritage Festival in 2012.
From his volcanic rise to fame on the heels of his iconic Woodstock performance, through his legendary Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and late career resurgence singing standards, Cocker remained on the music scene for decades.
His unique voice will be missed.
