Jimmy’s Second Annual Punk Rock and New Wave Reunion on December 27

For the second year in a row, famed uptown music club Jimmy’s hosts a punk rock and new wave blow-out bringing back together several of the bands that pioneered the ’80s punk scene in New Orleans for one night only. On Friday, December 27, Jimmy’s Music Club will re-open its doors for Sex Dog, The Backstabbers, Stephie and the WhiteSox, Poison Hearts, The Unnaturals, Rick Sinai and Reality Patio and more to once again take the stage. This will be the second year that Jimmy’s hosts the annual reunion show, the first one held at a hall in Jefferson Parish in 2011.

The city’s punk rock and new wave scenes have been largely under-documented; brass band, jazz and bounce traditions chronically overshadowing local punk influences. There have been a few punk documentaries announced, but none released (at least officially) yet. The film Almost Ready: The Story of Punk Rock in New Orleans has taken footage at the last few reunion shows and though seemingly active, is also yet to announce a release date. However, that means if you are an avid New Orleans punk rock or new wave fan, you might still have the chance to snag a cameo in some b-roll shots at Jimmy’s this Friday night.

Scaling down a bit from last year’s two-day program, this year’s punk reunion takes place on one night only, but remains a free show. After a long legal battle with the city and new neighbors since Katrina, Jimmy’s is set to re-open for good soon. Although the early end time of Friday’s show set for 12:30 a.m. suggesting that live music allowances may still be somewhat restricted. Nonetheless, the evening will be one not to miss if rare, underground New Orleans ’80s music is your desire. Jimmy’s original proprietor, Jimmy Anselmo, and the Backstabbers’ front man, Brad Orgeron, have personally organized the event, promising an authentic experience.

The 2nd Annual One & Only Punk Rock and New Wave Reunion 2013 is Friday, December 27, from 7:00 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. at Jimmy’s Music Club (8200 Willow Street). The show is ages 18 and up, admission is free.
