The Jefferson Performing Arts Society (JPAS) has announced the upcoming production of The View UpStairs, the musical written by Max Vernon. Set in New Orleans at the French Quarter UpStairs Lounge in 1973 , the show will be staged at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center for five performances from September 8 through September 17.
The heart of the story revolves around a young fashion designer in the present day who purchases an abandoned building in the French Quarter. To his surprise, he is transported back in time to the vibrant atmosphere of the UpStairs Lounge, a bustling gay bar from the seventies. This journey of self-discovery takes him through two generations of queer history, highlighting the gains and losses in the fight for equality. The play has been performed in both New York and London.
Locals, especially those who visited the Jefferson Parish library last month, will remember the UpStairs Lounge as the site of a tragic fire that claimed the lives of 32 gay men and left many others injured. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the devastating event, prompting Jefferson Performing Arts Society’s Artistic Director, Dennis Assaf, to choose this production to open the season.
Director Jack Lampert reflected on the significance of the production, stating, “Max Vernon’s beautiful musical combines passion, comedy, and truth as we journey through the eyes of a young man who steps back in time to share the struggle that those before him faced. With the world as it is today, this piece is not only important but poignant.”
The cast features performers like Donyae Asante, Ty Robbins, Marshall Harris, Rayshaughn Armant, Lauren Sparacello, Eddie Lockwood and more.
