Jazz Fest 2024 Official Poster Revealed: “Give Us A Sign: A Portrait of The Dixie Cups” by Kellie Talbot
The Jazz Fest 2024 official poster has been unveiled. Aptly titled “Give Us A Sign: A Portrait of The Dixie Cups,” the artwork by artist Kellie Talbot pays homage to the iconic girl group that left an indelible mark on the world of music.
Talbot, a masterful sign painter, brings a distinctive touch to the 2024 poster. Her photorealistic style captures the mid-century American landscape through vivid neon signs, reminiscent of the era when The Dixie Cups made their mark. The artwork envisions a neon sign hanging under a French Quarter balcony for six decades. The Signed, ReMarqued & C-Marqued editions bear special touches, including Jazz Fest’s grand marshal dancing inside a crescent moon.
The inspiration for this year’s poster struck like lightning, rooted in a memory triggered by the song “Chapel of Love” heard on WWOZ. The track, sung by three teenagers from New Orleans – Sisters Barbara & Rosa Hawkins and cousin Joan Johnson, led to their iconic journey from a local talent contest to recording hits that reshaped the American pop catalog. The Dixie Cups’ unique infusion of New Orleans soul into “Chapel of Love” and “Iko Iko” set the stage for a breakout success that the world couldn’t ignore.
Talbot’s journey to New Orleans began a quarter century ago, leading to residencies and capturing the essence of the city through surviving neon signs. Represented by Cole Pratt Gallery, Talbot’s recent sign paintings will be on display from April 6th to April 27th, with an opening reception on April 6th. The original painting and accompanying studies will be unveiled on April 24, staying up through May 6.
Since its inception in 1975, the Jazz Fest Poster Project has been a canvas for capturing the essence of New Orleans’ cultural identity. From grand marshals to influential artists, each year showcases a subject that resonates with the soul of the city. The 2024 poster marks the project’s mid-century milestone.
As the Jazz Fest 2024 approaches, “Give Us A Sign” stands as a glorious representation of The Dixie Cups’ impact and the vibrant spirit of New Orleans, immortalized through Talbot’s artistic brilliance. You can learn more or purchase your print here.
