The Standing Rock protests began in the spring when Native Americans from the Standing Rock Indian Reservation established a camp near a construction site for the Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline was projected to run under a lake just a few miles from the reservation, putting its residents’ water supply at risk and cutting through lands deemed sacred by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

The protests grew throughout the summer and fall, eventually leading to surprisingly intense crackdown from law enforcement and private security personnel. While the Army Corps of Engineers has since announced plans to reroute the pipeline, numerous protestors are skeptical of the Corps’ intentions and have refused to leave the camp.

According to a post on the show’s Facebook event page, Sunday’s concert at the Maple Leaf will raise money for legal funds that have been set up to assist people who were arrested during the protests.
