Maybe you’ve seen Isaac Toups juggling knives on YouTube, or you stole his Cajun jambalaya recipe and claim it as your own. Shame on you. You’ve probably stuffed your face at one of his restaurants, Toups’ Meatery, or Toups South (both of which are participating in COOLinary month).
You probably cheered for him on Bravo TV’s “Top Chef,” or have his book Chasing The Gator: Isaac Toups & The New Cajun Cooking in your lineup of kitchen cookbooks. If you’re one of the few people who don’t know him, you’re about to.
Chef Isaac Toups, the Rayne, Louisiana native known for his “born and braised” culinary style, is returning to television with his very own Food Network show. Premiering Saturday August 3, “Kitchen Takeover” will follow the popular Cajun chef across the states helping restaurant owners at their wits’ end get back on the road to success.
We’ve seen this song and dance before: a famous chef comes in to save a restaurant, usually in an aggressive way. Embarrassing the owners, shaming the staff, lots of guilt, yelling, screaming…it’s amusing, but a bit jarring and almost uncomfortable to watch. That’s all about to change. The two-time finalist for the James Beard “Best Chef : South” award will come with a different approach, Louisiana southern charm style.
In the premiere episode of “Kitchen Takeover,” the “big friendly Cajun chef” heads to Margarita Mommas’s Bourbon St.Grille in Fayetteville, Georgia. With revamped menu items, hopes of reinvigorating an uninspired staff, and helping the owners figure out their financial woes and then some, can they put in the work it’ll take to be saved? Tune in at 10 p.m. to see Chef Toups perform the first of many kitchen miracles.
Hey…now that’s a good name for a show, “Kitchen Miracles!” What’s up, Food Network?
