This weekend, the Indywood Theater and WWOZ team up to present films about New Orleans and its music.
The Indywood, an independent movie theater in the Marigny, will screen late filmmaker Les Blank’s 1978 documentary Always for Pleasure, which was recently transferred from 16mm film to HD and centers on New Orleans social traditions.
The film depicts second line funerals, Mardi Gras Indian performances, crawfish boils, and many of the city’s other traditions.
It features performances and interviews with such noted musicians as Kid Thomas Valentine, Danny Barker, Blu Lu Barker, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, The Neville Brothers, the Wild Tchoupitoulas, and Professor Longhair.
Each screening will open with some of WWOZ’s own short films. The well-known local radio station launched its video production department this year, and video director Charlie Steiner is excited to share some of their recent projects.
He and Indywood’s Will Sampson are set to program the series and lead brief discussions afterwards.
The screenings will take place this Sunday, February 8, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The Indywood Theater is located at 628 Elysian Fields Avenue.
