The New Orleans-based children’s group Imagination Movers are coming out with a new album titled Coveralls.
While the Imagination Movers aim their music at children, they stand out from other artists who do the same. Rather than most children’s groups which tend to stoop down to kids’ level, the Imagination Movers strive to bring kids “the music they deserve,” which are artistically complex and enjoyable for all audiences while having easy-to-understand messages palatable to children.
As part of their mission, the album features artists with little to no experience playing the Imagination Movers’ “alt-music for families.” Lafayette Based indie pop group Royal Teeth embodies this combination of family-friendly music with the song “Work Together,” which, as the title suggests, has kid-friendly lyrics about cooperation. The instrumentals are indie pop with drum pad beats laying the foundation for synthesizer lines and heavily delayed guitar and vocals. The album’s last track, “Butterfly,” played by GIVERS, another Lafayette band, similarly toes the line between indie pop and family-friendly music. The song opens with an acoustic guitar riff repeating throughout, which is then joined by background samples and an electronic drum beat. The album also features more prominent groups like Laundry Day, whose song “My Favorite Snack” features an electronic dance groove behind musings of tortilla chips and grapes, and Ska legends Mustard Plug whose song “Springtime” who brings classic Ska energy to a piece simply about how fun spring is.
The album marks 20 years for the band, and although it has nearly been a decade since their show on Disney, they’ve certainly retained a following.
