Hip Hop Caucus and the New Orleans Katrina Commemoration Foundation will host the 17th annual Hurricane Katrina March and Second Line on Monday, August 29 at 10 a.m. The commemoration will remember loved ones lost, celebrate community resiliency, and target demands for climate justice.
The day’s events will begin with a healing ceremony in the Lower Ninth Ward at N. Galvez Street and Jourdan Avenue, where the levees broke in 2005, followed by a march through the streets which will, in New Orleans tradition, feed into a large second line along N. Claiborne Avenue. The second line will end with a rally at Hunter’s Field, located at N. Claiborne Avenue and St. Bernard Avenue.
Participating performing artists will include Dawn Richard, Legendary Ms. Tee, Flagboy Giz, Young Sino, 7Teen, Roca B, Iris P and The Village Brass Band.
Formed in 2004, the Hip Hop Caucus (HHC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that leverages hip hop culture to encourage young people to participate in the democratic process. Through a collaborative leadership network, HHC addresses core issues affecting underserved communities. HHC programs and campaigns support solution-driven community organizing led by today’s young leaders.
The New Orleans Katrina Commemoration Foundation annually organizes the largest community-led remembrance event on August 29, the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Federal levees surrounding New Orleans failed due to the hurricane’s tidal surge and by August 31, 2005, 80 percent of New Orleans was flooded, with some parts under 15 feet of water.
