Next week will mark the 12th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and in acknowledgment a march and rally have been organized.
To remember the lives lost, honor the resiliency of the community, and advocate for the people most devastated by the devastating storm, Hip-Hop Caucus, New Orleans Katrina Commemoration Foundation, Nuthin But Fire Records, Q93, People’s Climate Music, and numerous community partners are hosting the 12th annual Hurricane Katrina March & Second Line on Tuesday, August 29, 2017.
Starting from Jourdan & Galvez in the Lower Ninth, the march will take off at 10a and make its way to Hunter’s Field. At its starting point, the event will feature a healing ceremony held right against the backdrop of where the levees broke in that neighborhood. A mutli-faith prayer and reading of the names of those lost to Katrina’s wrath will follow, after which the Hot 8 Brass Band will begin the second-line ceremony.
A rally will be held at Hunter’s Field until 4:30p, where New Orleans artists including Mia X, Sess 4-5, Roi Anthony, Hustlaz, Lady Red, Yung Pro, Shorty, Wildboy Woody, and DJ7 will speak and perform. The hip hop focused event will be hosted by Q93’s Wild Wayne.
Folks unable to attend the march or rally can still get involved. Event organizers are asking for the public’s support in several ways:
- Calling on the state of Louisiana to make August 29 a holiday commemorating the lives lost in Katrina.
- Calling for racial and economic justice so that in the face of disaster, the poor and people of color are not left without the ability to rebuild communities with good schools, good jobs, and good public health and safety.
- Calling for action on climate change from our world’s leaders, otherwise we will only see more of these extreme weather events like Katrina around the world.
