Famed trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer, composer and bandleader Hugh Masekela has canceled his upcoming appearances at Jazz Fest. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the South African native has called off a few recent dates due to an illness.
Masekela was scheduled to play two shows at the Fair Grounds during this year’s fest. The first—The Jazz Epistles featuring Abdullah Ibrahim & Ekaya and Hugh Masekela—was slated for the Jazz Tent on Saturday, April 29, and the second —A Salute to Louis Armstrong featuring Hugh Masekela and Dr. Michael White—was set for Thursday, May 4 at the Economy Hall Tent.
Both of those shows will still go on, albeit with altered lineups. Terence Blanchard will step in for the The Jazz Epistles performances, while Nicholas Payton and James Andrews will join the bill for the Louis Armstrong tribute.
As previously reported, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will kick off this Friday, April 28. The event will take over the Fair Grounds from April 28-30 and May 4-7. A comprehensive look at every artist on the bill can be found via our Jazz Fest A to Z Guide, and a number of in-depth profiles can be found in our new Jazz Fest Bible.
