October 1 is going to be a tough night of shows to decide between: If you’re not swayed by Aimee Mann at Tipitina’s or the Black Crowes at the Civic, you might want to catch an Indiana band that may well wind up as popular as both of the above: Houndmouth, a band from New Albany, Indiana that’s stirred up plenty of notice with its debut album From the Hills Below the City, released this past summer on the influential Rough Trade label. If your tastes run to insurgent country/rock bands like Uncle Tupelo and the Drive-By Truckers, you’re probably already a fan (especially since Houndmouth have already opened shows for the latter).
This will be Houndmouth’s second visit to New Orleans, but the first since they hit the relative big time after playing Bonnaroo Festival this year and then by playing on David Letterman’s show in July. Joining them will be Nashville-based songwriter Andrew Combs who just wrapped up a UK tour with Caitlin Rose. Often compared to the great Townes Van Zandt, he was pegged by No Depression mag as a songwriter “whose music almost takes your breath away.”
The show begins at 8 p.m. on Tuesday (October 1), at Gasa Gasa, 4920 Freret St. Tickets are $13.
