Producer Mark Bingham, a decorated musician who has worked with the likes of Dr. Michael White and Rebirth Brass Band (and who opened Piety Street Recording in 2001), will put on a performance of rare music this summer. “Lost Hoagy Carmichael” will be a curated set of little-known and previously unrecorded songs by the American composer who is best known for penning standards like “Georgia on My Mind,” The Nearness of You” and “Stardust.” Carmichael was one of the most acclaimed Tin Pan Alley songwriters of the 1930s.
Bingham will source much of the material he performs live from the Hoagy Carmichael Collection at the University of Indiana Archive of Traditional Music. He has excavated handwritten musical sketches and unaccompanied lyrics as well as fully fleshed compositions from Carmichael’s nascent career, a collection of music that will help preserve American music history for those lucky enough to be in the audience. Bingham was born in the same Indiana hospital as Carmichael and has in many ways become one of the preeminent protectors of the latter’s legacy.
“Lost Hoagy Carmichael” takes place in New York City at The Public Theater’s Joe’s Pub on Tuesday, August 14. Tickets are available here for $15.
