On June 11, the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans will host the “Heroes Wear Tie-Dye” Blood Drive and Block Party. The event, scheduled from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oak Street in uptown New Orleans, aims to unite the community for an afternoon of support.
The event’s primary focus is a blood drive, highlighting the ongoing need for blood donations, especially during the summer months when supplies often run low. The initiative was inspired by local tie-dye artist Joe Cooper, who bravely defended his wife Leslie during a home invasion, sustaining life-threatening injuries. Joe’s life was saved through a selfless blood donation, and now the community aims to honor his heroism and raise awareness about the importance of blood donation.
However, the “Heroes Wear Tie-Dye” Blood Drive and Block Party is not solely about donating blood. Attendees of all ages can enjoy various activities throughout the day. Live music performances by local artists, including Freddie Blue & the Friendship Circle Band, Cardboard Cowboy, and the Doyle Cooper Jazz Band, will play on the outdoor stage. Local tie-dye artists will also showcase their work, with opportunities for attendees to purchase their unique creations. A silent auction will feature premium pieces, including select items from the personal collection of musician George Porter Jr.
The “Heroes Wear Tie-Dye” Blood Drive and Block Party has become an annual event born out of a desire to honor heroism, foster community, and contribute to a worthy cause. Last year, the event collected blood and sent it to aid victims of the tragic mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Building on that success, this year’s organizers hope to surpass previous achievements and make a more significant impact.
The event relies on the generous support of individual donors and community partners who recognize the significance of rallying together for a noble cause. Those who wish to contribute and help save lives can make a donation. Those interested in donating blood are encouraged to sign up here.
