I am very sad to report the death of Herman Leonard, one of the world’s great photographers, and a longtime friend. Herman moved to New Orleans in 1992, and immersed himself in the New Orleans music scene. He lost his house and some of his work to Hurricane Katrina, and subsequently moved to Los Angeles. Leonard was known worldwide as a documentarian of jazz. His portraits of Dexter Gordon, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra and so many more have become emblematic of the history of jazz performers.
He was one of the most articulate, intelligent, passionate, talented, visionary and charming people I have ever had the privilege to know. His was very cool and he truly loved music and the musicians who made it.
Herman, you will never be forgotten and you’ll live on through your beautiful photographs.
