The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is currently accepting applications for its Heritage School of Music through September 1, 2019.
The Heritage School of Music provides free instrumental, ensemble, and music theory instruction for students ages ten to 17. Started in 1990, the program has a permanent home in the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center where state-of-the-art classrooms provide top-notch settings for music instruction. The School serves students ages eight to 17 and conducts classes on Saturday mornings and after school on Thursdays from September to December and January to May.
According to its website, “the Heritage School of Music students are engaged in a curriculum that includes instruction in instrumental technique (studio), ear training and the construction of musical compositions (theory), and jazz ensemble playing (combo).”
Applications for the 2019-2020 school year are now open. Applicants are required to own their own instruments in able to practice at home. Those who do not already own an instrument are encouraged to instead apply to the Heritage School of Music’s Beginners program. Applicants should have at least one year’s experience playing their instrument and will be required to showcase that experience in an audition.
