The Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music, operated by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, has announced the opening of the 2018-2019 application season. Open to children ranging from ages 8 to 17, the school offers music education at no charge with focuses on instrumental, ensemble and music-theory instruction.
Applications are accepted within the parameters of two distinct groups: Heritage School is for students aged 10 to 17 who have had at least one year of instruction and own an instrument, while HSM Beginners is for students aged 8 to 15 who have had little or no instruction and may or may not have an instrument. Applications for HSM Beginners are due by August 1, while Heritage School applicants have until September 1.
In addition to submitting an application form, students interested in Heritage School programming must also participate in an audition process. The full schedule of the Heritage School application process is as follows:
September 1, 2018 – Application Deadline
September 5, 2018 – Applicants will receive an email with their assigned audition time
September 8, 2018 – Auditions at the Jazz & Heritage Center
September 11, 2018 – Admission decisions sent via email
September 15, 2018 – Parent/child orientation & first day of class
HSM Beginners applicants, however, are required only to submit an application form and take part in a low-pressure interview. According to organizers, this stage “consists of a brief conversation between the student (parents/guardians are welcome to attend) and a member of our staff. The purpose is to determine the student’s level of interest and commitment.” The full schedule of the HSM Beginners application process is as follows:
