This year’s Essence Festival–from July 5 to July 7 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome–is set to showcase a variety of performers, many of whom are from Louisiana
The funk and soul group Water Seed, a band that formed while founder and drummer Lou Hill was studying at Xavier University, are scheduled to play on July 5, with songs from their album We Are Stars, which the band released in 2017. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Luke James, a New Orleans native who has said he’s larger than the label “King of R&B,” is also performing on July 5.
More local performances on Essence’s July 5 date include the gospel singer Koryn Hawthorne, whose debut album Unstoppable made it to number one on Billboard’s top gospel albums in Jan. 2019, and Mia X, the artist who made rap history when she became the first woman to sign with Master P’s record label–No Limit Records–in 1994.
July 5 also marks the return of the rapper Pell to New Orleans. As Pell grew up in the city but had to relocate after Hurricane Katrina, any performance in New Orleans holds tremendous meaning for the rapper. Maroon 5 keyboardist and New Orleans native PJ Morton, whose album Gumbo Unplugged earned him a GRAMMY.
On July 6, Erica Falls, who performs solo as a soul singer when not providing guest vocals for the funk band Galactic, will perform, along with Nigel Hall, a New Orleans transplant and talented soul singer and keyboardist.
To close off the festival on July 7, there will be performances by former Big Tymers member and producer Mannie Fresh, R&B singer-songwriter Lucky Daye, the Queen of Bounce Big Freedia, singer and dancer Normani, Def Jams Recordings signee August Alsina and eight-piece jazz band The Soul Rebels.
Of note, too, are the four New Orleans artists who were named winners of the New Orleans Music Showcase, which took place May 30. The four winners–DAWN, CASME, Vegas Cola and Drea Marie–will also perform at Essence Fest.
