One New Orleans acts performing at Hangout fest this year is the EDM duo sfam. At the 2022 BUKU Music and artist project, sfam met many technical difficulties but despite the nearly 15 minutes of on-and-off music, fans stuck around to support them. It’s a testament to the fanbase they’ve built in their home city of New Orleans and around the country.
At the time, the duo had just played in Indianapolis and Philadelphia before flying to BUKU to perform a late-night set in New Orleans. Last summer, they had a busy touring season playing several EDM festivals around the country, fueled by too little sleep and too many energy drinks.
The tall and laid-back one of the two, Michael Pearson, said his favorite energy drink was Celsius. While Jacob Hoerner, who is usually the more energetic one and always the shorter of the two, said he liked Alani Nu.
“They have like Mimosa Watermelon Ice or some sh*t,” Hoerner said.
“Mimosa?” Pearson said.
“They got a mimosa energy drink. I swear to God,” Hoerner said, “It kinda gives the taste [of alcohol].”
“Who likes an alcohol-tasting drink that doesn’t have alcohol?” Pearson said.
“I don’t know, it is weird,” Hoerner said.
Even over trivial things like energy drinks, the banter between them can seem mean-spirited on paper, but it’s all good fun. The two have known each other since they were 11, so saying things like “On stage, we hate each other” is just how they show affection. The duo collaborates closely with New Orleans-adopted, now Denver-based DJ TVBOO on many projects.
