Guitar Lightnin’ Lee Diagnosed with Lung Cancer, Fundraiser Launched to Assist Him

New Orleans blues guitarist Guitar Lightnin’ Lee has been diagnosed with cancer, according to NOLA.com. The publication reports that the musician’s longtime drummer and manager, Paul Artigues, has confirmed he has stage 3 lung cancer.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist the musician, whose given name is Leroy Williams, with medical expenses that his insurance doesn’t cover. The page was campaign was created by Williams’ niece.

Artigues told NOLA.com that doctors are optimistic that the guitarist’s tumor can be shrunk. However, “the insurance is not covering everything,” the drummer told NOLA.com, “so it’s making sure he can get the treatment he needs when he needs it.”

“Yeah, its true. I’m feeling pretty good. It’s a heavy scene, but I got a lot more living to do,” Williams wrote via his band’s Facebook page. “One week down, five to go. I’m gonna rock this cancer out of me. Who’s with me?!”

Williams, a New Orleans native who grew up in the Lower Ninth Ward, has played the blues since the 1960s. He teamed up with Artigues in 1997, and the two have performed together for years as part of the The Thunder Band (they made headlines in 2013 when Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant sat in with them at BJs).

A benefit show for Williams has been organized in addition to the GoFundMe page. The show is scheduled to take place this Saturday, January 21, at the Poor Boys Bar in New Orleans. Big Box Band, Ernie Vincent with The Thunder Band, Planchettes and more are scheduled to perform at the event.

Guitar Lightnin’ Lee is the latest New Orleans musician to be diagnosed with  cancer. Piano icon Henry Butler has also been diagnosed with cancer, and a GoFundMe campaign aimed at assisting him was launched last week.
