For over 12 years, Gravity A has treated New Orleans to its very own homegrown jamtronica. Drawing influences from acts like The Disco Biscuits, STS9 and Medeski, Martin & Wood, the group continues to blend old school improvisational rock with modern electronica in a way that is both of and for the 21st century.
Considering the four-piece’s full on embrace of the digital world, it’s no surprise that acoustic shows haven’t been a part of the equation. Yet all of that is about to change this Friday when keyboardist Andrew Meehan, drummer Michael Fouquier, bassist Devin Kerrigan and Danny Abel convene at Gasa Gasa for their first-ever “Gravity A: Unplugged” set.
“We’ve had this idea for a while,” explains Fouquier, who co-founded the band in 2004. “I always thought it was a cool show idea, but I also enjoyed the challenge of taking music that relies on a lot of synths, computers tracks and drum pads, and going acoustic with it.”
Vocalist John Paul Carmody will join Gravity A for the show, which is inspired by the iconic MTV series of the same name. Fans are asked to “dress to impress” in order to give the intimate show a more stately atmosphere. .
“I always loved the MTV unplugged sessions back in the 90s. I think the Alice in Chains and Nirvana were my favorite two,” Fouquier adds. “We are stoked to have Mid City Pizza sponsoring it so that we could have our own MCP Unplugged. After having our first rehearsal we are all feeling really good about the possibilities.”
Gravity: Unplugged will debut at Gasa Gasa at 9pm on Friday, March 24. Tickets for the show are still on sale.
