Girls Play Trumpets Too Will Host an Open House

Girls Play Trumpets Too, an organization dedicated to empowering young female musicians, is hosting its first-ever open house on Saturday, March 15 at the New Orleans African American Museum. The free event offers an inside look at the program’s mission to break gender barriers in the music industry while providing attendees with an afternoon of performances, testimonials, and educational opportunities.

Visitors will have the chance to meet program staff, hear from students and parents, and enjoy live performances by talented young musicians. In addition to the musical showcases, the event will feature a financial literacy workshop presented in partnership with Chase Bank, aimed at equipping young artists with essential financial skills.

Girls Play Trumpets Too was founded to challenge stereotypes in the music industry, creating opportunities for young women to pursue instrumental performance, particularly in brass sections where they are often underrepresented. The organization was founded in 2022 by New Orleans trumpeter, music educator, producer and composer Troy Sawyer. Growing up surrounded by the city’s rich musical heritage, Sawyer initially believed that professional trumpet playing was a male-dominated field, shaped by societal perceptions of strength and leadership. However, his experiences at Loyola University’s Jazz Camp and later at Dillard University shattered these misconceptions when he encountered exceptionally talented female trumpet players. Now a professional musician and educator, Sawyer is committed to inspiring young girls to take up the trumpet, working to change the narrative and ensure greater representation of female trumpet players in jazz.

The open house runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and is open to the public. Parents, educators, and music lovers are encouraged to attend and learn more about the organization’s impact on the local music community.
