The New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA) is set to bring Giordano Dance Chicago, America’s first jazz dance company, to New Orleans for a one-night-only debut on Saturday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts. The event marks a historic appearance for the legendary dance company, which has been hailed as “American jazz dance royalty” by the Chicago Tribune. Known for its powerful and energetic performances, Giordano Dance Chicago has captivated audiences across 1,300 cities worldwide in its more than six-decade history, showcasing a uniquely American dance form on stages around the globe.
Founded in 1963 by jazz dance pioneer Gus Giordano, the Chicago-based company holds an iconic status in the dance world, embodying and advancing the art of jazz dance while honoring its roots. Giordano’s early connection to New Orleans — where, as a child, he first encountered jazz music by hearing Jelly Roll Morton — inspired his lifelong dedication to the art form. Today, his daughter Nan Giordano continues her father’s vision, serving as Artistic Director and overseeing the company’s performances, choreography and international education efforts. She also leads the development of the Giordano Technique, a foundational method taught by certified instructors in nine countries and 36 U.S. states.
The New Orleans performance will feature the premiere of Gershwin in B, a theatrical celebration of George Gershwin’s music, choreographed by Emmy Award-winning Al Blackstone of So You Think You Can Dance fame. The program also includes works by acclaimed choreographers Mia Michaels and Ray Leeper, set to a lively soundtrack of music from iconic artists such as Gladys Knight, Al Green, and Tina Turner.
The event is part of NOBA’s mission to present world-class dance performances and educational opportunities throughout the Central Gulf region. Each year, NOBA reaches over 33,000 dance enthusiasts and students, providing classes, workshops and events. Following Giordano Dance Chicago, NOBA will host Ballet Hispánico’s CARMEN.maquia, a Picasso-inspired piece, on February 1, and the return of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater with two programs on March 21 and 22.
Tickets for the Giordano Dance Chicago performance start at $35 and are available at www.nobadance.com or by calling 504-522-0996. NOBA also offers discounts for seniors, students, and groups, as well as a Build Your Own package subscription for the season with savings of up to 15%.
