Hospitality workers in the New Orleans area who lost jobs relating to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will experience some relief through Get Shift Done, a partnership between the New Orleans Business Alliance (NOLABA), Second Harvest Food Bank and other local food supply organizations.
Get Shift Done’s Get Shift Done for NOLA initiative hires hospitality workerss at $12 an hour to provide meals for families and individuals in need and who’ve been impacted by COVID-19. With investments from NOLABA and Capital One, Get Shift Done for NOLA provides paid opportunities for positions which were previously filled by volunteers.
Karen DeBlieux, Greater New Orleans Market President at Capital One, said in a press release, “Capital One is proud to partner with Get Shift Done in New Orleans as part of our larger efforts to help the community in response to COVID-19. By using our resources to help with urgent issues like hunger relief and workforce development, we can support the city’s most vulnerable through this situation and the collective recovery.”
With its origin in Dallas, Get Shift Done makes its Louisiana debut in New Orleans and has already employed 50 people with approximately ten weeks of work. NOLABA continues to accept donations in an effort to expand its offerings to workers.
NOLABA President and CEO Quentin Messer Jr., said, “Our role as the accredited economic development agency for New Orleans requires that we employ innovative strategies and leverage strategic partnerships to ensure that New Orleans and all of its residents are financially secure. We’re deeply grateful we were able to quickly utilize this innovative program to answer the surge in need for hunger relief in our community, while also directly supporting our local hospitality workers and opportunity youth.”
