During the final two weeks of Carnival, February 5 – 16, Funky Uptown Krewe will be auctioning ten of its signature throws to benefit the New Orleans Musician’s Clinic.
One record will be auctioned every day on the Funky Uptown Krewe’s Instagram page beginning on February 5, 2021, and continuing every day there would traditionally be a parade (February 10-16, 2021). Bids will be accepted in comments on Instagram from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the days of the auction. Bidding starts a $10 for each record and increases in $5 increments.
Twelfth Night is the traditional kick-off of Carnival season, making these parades the first of the year’s festivities. In the spirit and tradition of multiple Mardi Gras krewes reveling on the same night, the Funky Uptown Krewe traditionally follows the original Heralds of Carnival, the Phunny Phorty Phellows, on the St. Charles streetcar line.
The Krewe’s signature throws include hand-decorated, bedazzled vinyl records, beads, toys, logo cups, and koozies. Funky Uptown Krewe’s goal is to encourage more revelers to visit the St. Charles streetcar line on Twelfth Night and provide some small boost to local businesses. The Krewe is 100% volunteer-run and more than 90% of every dollar spent by the Krewe is spent locally. The Krewe members also volunteer with various charities throughout the year, such as Arc GNO, New Orleans Habitat for Humanity, and NOLA Trash Mob.
One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the New Orleans Musician’s Clinic to further its motion of providing comprehensive medical care and social services to musicians, performing artists, cultural workers, and tradition bearers in New Orleans. Their mission is to overcome health disparity and uplift the performers who are the heartbeat of the community. The NOMC remains the USA’s only low- or no-cost comprehensive medical clinic specifically dedicated to serving the needs of performing artists.
