Fundraiser Honors Shannon Powell with Star-Studded Concert

In a heartfelt gesture of community support, the Preservation Hall Foundation and Tipitina’s are collaborating to honor legendary drummer Shannon Powell, who recently suffered a stroke and heart attack. The special benefit concert will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2024, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Tipitina’s, with all proceeds supporting Powell’s recovery.

The concert will feature a stellar lineup of musicians, with performances by members of Galactic, Dumpstaphunk, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, George Porter, Jr., Jon Cleary, Kermit Ruffins, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Corey Henry, Tonya Boyd-Cannon, Zigaboo Modeliste and others who have been touched by Powell’s artistry. The evening’s music will be arranged under the direction of renowned drummer Herlin Riley, a close collaborator and friend of Powell.

Shannon Powell, affectionately known as the “King of Treme,” is one of New Orleans’ most revered drummers. With deep roots in traditional jazz, Powell has become an iconic figure in the city’s vibrant music scene, contributing to its cultural fabric for decades. His mastery of rhythm and his contributions to the preservation of New Orleans’ jazz heritage have left a lasting impact on musicians and fans alike.
