Today is Clarence “Frogman” Henry’s 77th birthday! Frogman’s 1956 debut “Ain’t Got No Home” displayed his unique talent for switching from a deep, gravelly, frog-like voice to a high pitched falsetto.
Frogman toured with the Beatles, performing as their opening act for 18 shows, including one in New Orleans City Park on September 16, 1964. OffBeat commemorated that historic show in our September 2004 issue, which you can order online.
In honor of his birthday, here is Frogman performing his hit “(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do” on a 1966 television appearance on a show called The Beat. He gets extra points for having go-go dancers, a sharply dressed horn section, and a blue piano.
Fellow New Orleans musical icon Robert Parker comes out at the end along with the other guests from that episode to wrap up the show. Enjoy, and wish Frogman happy birthday in the comments!
