The City of New Orleans has shared news of the upcoming retirement of Leslie Alley, a seasoned public servant and the Executive Director of the French Market Corporation (FMC). Ms. Alley, who submitted her resignation letter on January 18, is set to retire on March 30.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell expressed appreciation for Ms. Alley’s dedicated service, noting her significant contributions in enhancing the cultural, communal, and commercial aspects of the historic French Market properties. Ms. Alley played a pivotal role in aligning with the city’s vision to position the French Market District as a gateway to New Orleans’ unique hospitality, supporting small businesses, and fostering tourism growth. Her achievements include securing an $8 million Cooperative Endeavor Agreement for the Pontalba building and advocating for additional resources for the unhoused population through a $500,000 allocation from the French Quarter Management District taxation.
Ms. Alley’s retirement marks the end of an impactful chapter in her over 20-year career with the City of New Orleans, during which she held executive roles at the City Planning Commission and the Department of Safety and Permits. Councilmembers and board members have commended her dedication, leadership, and lasting impact on the community, with Katherine Guidry being recommended as the next FMC Executive Director, pending board approval.
