Four brothers from two different bands were inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame during a ceremony held at Rock ‘n’ Bowl in Lafayette on July 30. David Rubin (Rockin’ Dopsie Jr.), Alton Rubin (Tiger Dopsie) and Anthony Rubin (Anthony Dopsie), all members of Rockin’ Dopsie Jr & the Zydeco Twisters, and Dwayne Rubin (Dwayne Dopsie), who fronts Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers, were inducted.
Dwayne Dopsie, the youngest son of zydeco legend Alton Jay Rubin (Rockin’ Dopsie), has been nominated twice for a Grammy Award. His latest album, Set Me Free, on Louisiana Red Hot Records will be released on August 20. Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers have won numerous Best of the Beat Awards. Geraldine Wyckoff wrote: “Whenever Dwayne takes center stage leading his band, the Zydeco Hellraisers, he continues to display the same kind of tenacity and drive he exhibited as a youngster in his pursuit of his childhood dream of becoming a force in zydeco music.”
As part of an introduction to a live session concert, NPR wrote, “When Rockin’ Dopsie Sr. unexpectedly passed away in 1993, the Dopsie family vowed to keep his memory alive, mainly in the incarnation of this band, Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. & The Zydeco Twisters. In doing so, it’s become its own phenomenon. No other zydeco band has ever been fronted by a washboard player. It’s usually the accordionist, and it’s also a safe bet that there’s never been such a flamboyant personality as Rockin’ Dopsie, Jr., who can turn a house upside down on a moment’s notice.”
Jeff Hannusch wrote: “Since taking over his late father’s band—the Zydeco Twisters—in 1993, David Rubin a.k.a. Rockin’ Dopsie Jr., has become one of New Orleans’s premier attractions. Dopsie has been able to preserve the integrity of his father’s zydeco music but added a measure of showmanship few can match. Splits, stage dives and tumbles are as much a part of his set”
