Zigaboo Modeliste and George Porter Jr. did a lot of celebrating last week. For instance, The Meters drummer and bassist both celebrated their respctive birthdays, with Modeliste turning 68 and Porter turning 69.
They also celebrated the New Year at the Joy Theater, where the pair teamed up with The New Mastersounds guitarist Eddie Roberts and Greyboy Allstars keyboardist Robert Walter for the latest incarnation of Foundation of Funk on December 31.
That new project, which finds Modeliste and Porter joined by a rotating cast of musicians, will reconvene at Tipitina’s on Friday, February 24. This time they’ll be joined by guitar wizard Anders Osborne and keyboardist extraordinaire Jon Cleary, who will help them celebrate the carnival season with a Mardi Gras show.
Since carnival season will be in full swing, fans will be able to see Modeliste, Porter, Osborne and Cleary take the stage at Tipitina’s just a few hours after Krewe d’Etat, the Krewe of Morpheus and the Krewe of Hermes roll along the nearby Uptown parade route. It’s a setup that has pulled huge crowds for Galactic and Trombone Shorty in the past, so it’s safe to say things will be similar for this collection of New Orleans heroes.
Pre-sale tickets for the Foundation of Funk show have already sold out, but tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10am on Friday, January 6.
