Debuting at number 53 on the Billboard R&B albums chart, Flow Tribe’s most recent album is an exercise in establishing one’s place in a city perpetually overflowing with musicians. “Boss” is a swaggering, vibrant effort featuring the local band who prides itself on providing listeners with “backbone crackin’ music.” It’s a fitting term, as assigning any one genre would be far too constricting. One omnipresent constant about Flow Tribe, however, is the unarguably jammin’ nature of its live performance – well documented in the group’s latest video, premiering today (September 6) at OffBeat.
“Blackmail” features the colorful six-man crew plus horn players Evan Oberla, Ari Kohn, and Cyrus Nabipoor from Brass Lightning in addition to background sirens Kayla Jasmine and Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph of Tank and the Bangas, plus Andrew Meehan aka Drew Meez on keys and synths. The result is a mélange of styles serving as a prime example of what fans have come to expect from Flow Tribe: diversity and style. The live-studio version of the record was filmed at Downman Sounds, a recording studio Flow Tribe refers to as its headquarters.
Flow Tribe (along with managing guru Mannie Fresh) appeared on the June 2017 cover of “OffBeat.” The band will be performing on Saturday, September 9 at Tipitina’s (501 Napoleon Ave.) with opening act Stoop Kids. $15 tickets are available here.
