A few months ago we reported that the people behind Florida’s Bear Creek Music Festival were organizing a similar event in New Orleans. Dubbed the Bear Creek Bayou Music Festival, it was slated to take place September 30 and October 1 at Mardi Gras World.
After much speculation, the initial lineup for this new fest has finally dropped, and it’s shaping up to be a very funky affair.
Psych-rockers The Flaming Lips top the bill for the inaugural event, which will also feature Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Lettuce, Soulive, Foundation of Funk (feat. George Porter, Zigaboo Modeliste, John Medeski and Eddie Roberts), Dumpstaphunk, Lotus, The Floozies, Nth Power, Papadosio, Earphunk and many more.
Other artists on the lineup include Tony Hall’s New Orleans Soul Stars Tribute to James Brown, Chali 2na & the House of Vibe, Zach Deputy and Flow Tribe, while more acts are set to be announced a later date.
In addition, the festival will host a number of “artists at large” that will be on hand to sit in with other acts. Medeski, Porter, Pee Wee Ellis, Chali 2na, Jennifer Hartswick, Natalie Cressman and Skerik are among the musicians that will participate.
On top of all that, Bear Creek Bayou will throw an official pre-party with Soulive & Friends, OG Garage A Trois, Naughty Professor with Chali 2na and Pirate’s Choice at the Joy Theater on Thursday, September 29.
As we noted a few months ago, Bear Creek Bayou has risen from the ashes of the original Bear Creek Music Festival. That undertaking called Live Oak, FL’s beautiful Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park home for eight years before it folded in 2015. Much like its successor, the fest’s lineups were steeped in the tradition of New Orleans funk, but also featured a healthy dose of jamband, roots rock and electronic acts.
Tickets for the festival are currently on sale here.
