Chess enthusiasts and film buffs alike are in for a treat as the New Orleans Jazz Museum presents a special screening of “The Man in the Red Beret,” a documentary spotlighting the extraordinary journey of Chess Master Jude Acers. Acers, known for his iconic “World Chess Table” on Decatur Street in the New Orleans French Quarter, has been engaging challengers in thrilling games for $5 each since 1981, creating a lasting tradition that reflects his captivating story.
Directed by Derek Bridges, a distinguished filmmaker with a Journalism degree from Illinois State University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Florida, “The Man in the Red Beret” is a testament to dedication and passion. Collaborating with director of photography Kaitlin Hanrahan, a Sociology graduate from Loyola University New Orleans, Bridges dedicated 12 years to produce this compelling documentary. Their hard work paid off as the film recently won the Best Feature Documentary Award at the Abita Springs International Film Festival.
As Jude Acers prepares to celebrate his 80th birthday on April 6, he will be present at the screening, adding a personal touch to the event. The screening of “The Man in the Red Beret” is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more details and tickets, visit the New Orleans Jazz Museum’s official website at nolajazzmuseum.org.
