On Friday, June 28, 2024, at 7 p.m., the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center in New Orleans will host the premiere of “Guardians of the Flame,” a documentary directed by Daniel Wolff that delves deep into the heart of New Orleans’ cultural tapestry through the inspiring journey of the Harrison family.
Spanning 17 years of filming, “Guardians of the Flame” is a testament to resilience, creativity and the enduring spirit of cultural preservation. Following Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, the Harrison family emerged as stalwarts of Black masking culture. Led by matriarch Herreast Harrison, they embarked on a transformative mission to safeguard and redefine their heritage amidst challenges of systemic neglect and cultural appropriation. The movie captures three generations of hope. It shows what one family can do, how tradition gets passed on and re-made, what it means to stand for something.
Initiated by filmaker Jonathan Demme, “Guardians of the Flame” became a labor of love and commitment. Demme’s involvement spanned years of intimate filming sessions, capturing the everyday triumphs and challenges faced by the Harrison family as they navigated the complexities of cultural survival.
Attendees will witness the Harrison family’s journey through the lens of artistry and activism, exploring contributions such as Donald Harrison, Jr.’s Grammy-nominated musical career and Michele Harrison’s innovative beadwork.
