Fans may pay respects at visitation for Chris Owens April 10

Funeral arrangements for the late Bourbon Street entertainer and club owner Chris Owens have been finalized. There will a public viewing on Sunday April 10, from 9–11 a.m. at Garden of Memories Funeral Home and Cemetery in Metairie, located at 4900 Airline Drive. A private funeral will follow.

Owens will be interred in a mausoleum near her late husband Sol Owens, who died in 1979, her sister Burnelle L. Schmitz, who died in 2019, and longtime companion Mark Davison, who also died in 2019.

Owens, who would have turned 90 in October, died from a heart attack on April 5 in the apartment above her French Quarter nightclub. Her namesake Easter parade will go forward on Sunday, April 17, in the French Quarter beginning at 1 p.m. The 17-float procession will begin and end at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel.

Affectionately known as the “Queen of the Vieux Carré,” Owens entertained visitors and locals alike with her song-and-dance numbers at nightclubs in the French Quarter for more than six decades. She told the Times-Picayune in 1974 that she was “the only legitimate act that didn’t include taking all my clothes off” on the bawdy thoroughfare known for its proliferation of striptease clubs.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a statement following the announcement of Owens’ death: “Today we mourn the passing of Chris Owens, one of the brightest lights of the French Quarter. The consummate entertainer and the star of her own Bourbon Street nightclub, Ms. Owens was charismatic, beautiful and iconic. This news is even sadder, as we are just weeks away from the Easter Parade that became her most glorious stage. May she rest in God’s perfect peace.”
