The annual Art for Art’s Sake celebration will bring several options to all art seekers in New Orleans as the arts scene comes to effervescence on Saturday, October 3rd.
The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) will offer free admission for its Arts & Membership experience from 5 to 8 p.m., featuring Reverb exhibition Artist Talks, a pop-up performance by progressive string quartet Ethel, the opening of the Stacks art & design bookstore in the Center, visual arts and theater workshops for children and more.
“REVERB: Past, Present and Future” is an exhibition of large-scale installations, interactive video, handcrafted textiles, historical reenactment and more positioning the change, revitalization, determination, and creative innovation of New Orleans’ artistic community 10 years after Katrina. As part of the exhibition, the CAC will be showing Amending, a large-scale stop motion animation by artists Kira Akerman and Silvie Deutsch on Saturday.
The event is followed by an art walk in the Arts District, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Ogden Museum of Southern Art will also open its door to the public for no charge, from 6 to 9 p.m.
After opening “Object of Interest: Recent Acquisitions for the Permanent Collection” on September 21st, which highlighted recent additions to the museum’s collection of Southern art, Ogden will use the Art for Arts’ Sake to open two additional exhibitions: Bill Yates: Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink, and Michael Meads: Bent, Not Broken.
Bill Yates’ Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink exhibits a selection from the photographer’s 600 stills taken in a seven-month period in 1972 and 1973 at a Florida skating rink, 40 years later.
Artist Michael Meads lost a lot of his works when his New Orleans studio in August of 2005. The Bent, Not Broken exhibition focuses on his post-Katrina works, large graphite drawings depicting the Crescent City, its history and its struggles, through a Carnaval lens.
The Magazine Street Merchant Association also promises an evening of music, wine, gallery openings, and shopping, running from 5 to 9 p.m.
